As for weird Halloween thing I think the bowls with the reaching hand and various other dishes are some of the stuff I look at and just shake my head. I just like for kids to dress up, jack-o- lanterns and candy for Halloween. I decorate more for fall and Thanksgiving than for Halloween. Sorry to be a party pooper. Have a great week everyone.

I know that fall has arrived by the turning of the leaves and the drop in temps which are now in the high 40's to low 50's. We had our first frost on Monday. We also have "termination" dust on top of the mountains which means summer is terminated and fall has arrived,lol.

I like fall because it's getting closer to Thanksgiving (one of my favorite holidays) and closer to Christmas and to my daughter's visit to Alaska. I can hardly wait to decorate my room in fallish colors and I am hoping that snow will wait awhile before it makes an appearance.

1. Do you knit or crochet? For how long?
I only crochet, though I learned to knit when I was younger. I've been crocheting since I was 5 or 6, so a lot of years!

2. What sort of needles or hooks do you enjoy using the most? Are there some you've been dying to try out and haven't?
I like using metal hooks; I'm not a fan of plastic, and I've never tried wood - the one my daughter sent me is just too large for anything I make, so I'm not sure.

3. What kind of projects do you most enjoy? Small things you can take with you, or big complex ones that are just gorgeous when they're done?
I enjoy both; I try to have a couple of each going at each time.

4. List one pattern for a dishcloth that you love to make, or just tell us about one you've made or received that you loved.
I started making dishcloths from the Crochet A Day Calendar, and I'm really enjoying those. It's fun to learn and try new ones.

5. What are your 'must have' notions? Are there any notions you need or can never have enough of? Any that might make you cry if you owned more?
I am very easy to please - I generally like the things I get, even if I have some; I'm not bothered by having more than one of something, I can choose one that suits my mood and appreciate the thoughtfulness.

6. What are your favorite yarns to work with? Any you hate or are allergic to?
I'm not a fan of scratchy wools - they itch me very badly. I've not ever tried the organic cotton, and I like Peaches n Creme more than Sugar N Creme, but love soft cottons too.

7. What colors do you like to use in projects? Any we'd never catch on your needles?
I love all colors!

8. Any cottons you'd like to try you can't find by you, or just haven't gotten around to getting?
Pretty much just the organic cotton - I tried to get some for my last pal and couldn't find it!

Halloween, Fall, and General Stuff
9. Do you like to use bar soap or shower gel more? What kinds of scents do you love? What kind do you hate?
I like Lavender most of all, and I use either bar soaps or shower gels - which ever I have.

10. What's more 'Halloweeny' - Ghosts, Pumpkins, or Witches?
Pumpkins!

11. What's your favorite Treat to get? Sweet or Salty? Anything you're allergic to or just hate?
I like nuts - macadamia and cashew especially - I enjoyed some biscotti I got from my last pal, or ginger cookies. Not a huge fan of most chocolates, though now and then I get a hankering; and I am a milk lover, not dark.

12. What was your favorite Halloween Costume as a kid? As an adult??
There isn't Halloween in Germany, so I didn't really dress up for it as a child. I don't really dress up as an adult, but I like wearing tshirts or sweatshirts for holidays.

No, I'm not.

14. Anything else you'd like to be sure your pal knows?
Nothing I can think of! I love swapping and look forward to this one.

Hello everyone out there. I hope you all still have a nice summer. Our summer has been really bad. Lots of cool weather and very little sunshine. I need to apologize to my secret pal for not posting a picture of my July package. I am sooooo sorry. It was a great package and I will post the pictures tonight. I thought I had done so before, but looking at my blog, apparently not. Again, I am sorry, the package was on time and it was wonderful.

Things are quiet around here. School started last week and everybody is gone except my 5 mos and 2 yr old. They do keep me busy. Looks like it is going to start raining outside and the baby just woke up wanting a bottle. So I better go for now and I'll be back tonight. Have a great day all.

I also love the shower gel and the candle. I appreciated you wrapping everything so pretty and I would have taken a picture if my 6 year old granddaughter wouldn't have helped me "unwrapping" them before I could get to my camera. I want to try to crochet something from the magazine you sent and I will get real busy crocheting dishcloth. The little drawers are grate and I can really use them. Thank you so much again. Hello everyone, I know I'm a bad girl for not posting more often on my blog. I am very sorry, but I've been busy with VBS and then I've been sick and still not 100%. Our summer has arrived and we have temps in the mid to high 60's. Went swimming with my grand daughter (indoor pool) . She loves swimming since she has had some lessons. Went to the park yesterday for the 4th of July. The weather was nice and we had lots of fun. I received my yarn package and it was wonderful. I will post a picture for everyone to see and I was late in mailing my pals package and I hope she will forgive me. Well I better go, answer some e-mails and take some pictures. Hello everyone, hope you all enjoy the beginning of summer. I am so busy and I am so far behind with blogging that I don't know where to start. I received my prize from the coffee swap. A beautiful shawl, knitted and donated by Grace Y. and just my color RED. Thank you so much Grace and my apology that it took me this long to acknowledge and thank you. I will post a picture this weekend. Our summer has finally arrived as have the mosquitoes. They are pretty bad already. I have started packages for two swaps I've entered. As for the dishcloth swap, the two topics, one I don't have a favorite pattern and have tried lately to us different patterns from a crochet calendar I got for Christmas, the second I know that summer has arrived when the mosquitoes arrive and when it stays light til almost midnight and soccer games for my six year old granddaughter start at 8:00 p.m.. As I said before, I will take and post some pictures this weekend. Right now I have to get ready for VBS to prepare 170 snacks and then some more baby sitting.

I crochet only - no knitting here, and for about the last 59 years :)

I like metal the best, and I really hate working with plastic. I've never really tried wood.

3. What are your favorite types of yarn? Any you just can't stand?

I don't really have a favorite - I like soft wools, cottons, silks - just about anything, I hate scratchy wools - it reminds me of ickly wool I had to wear when I was little.

4. When it comes to cotton, are there any brands you'd love to try and haven't?

Too many to name - I mostly use dishcloth cotton, and have some gotten some nice ones from pals though.

5. When you make Dishcloths, do you use them yourself, or tend to give them as gifts?

Both - I like using handmade dishcloths and towels.

6. Do you have a favorite color? Any that you dislike?

I like all colors, but I really prefer bright colors over pastels or deep shades. For example, I like fire engine red more than a deep maroon.

7. What color(s) (if any!) are your kitchen and bath decorated in?

Not really a single color; the kitchen has a deep blue for a lot of things, and the bath has a lot of sage green and cream color.

8. What are your favorite scents around the house?

I like Lavender for everything!

9. What is your very favorite thing about summer?

That it's light outside until 11 at night and that you can do things outdoors - especially here in Alaska!

10. What is your least favorite thing about summer?

The mosquitos!

I like body washes more than soaps, but I really enjoy either if it smells nice.

Hrm. This is a tough one. Lavender! I also like Plumeria.

I love my baby blankets I make - and the moms seem to like them too! I also like some new dishcloth patterns I like.

My WIP are two baby blankets, a scarf and some dishrags and I haven't worked on any of them. Our springtime has finally arrived. Snow is all gone, the trees are showing more green every day and the sun is shining. It is great after all the snow. I just love it. We have 4 more days of school left and the kids are really exited as I am. I hope you all have a wonderful summer.

Here are some pictures of the wonderful package I received from my secret pal. Edit: Silly me, I forgot to tell you who it was! She's not a secret now - my amazing pal was Cindy! I am drinking some of the coffee she sent me while I'm trying to post these pictures.I loved everything she sent, the coffee, wonderful stitch markers, cashew and macademia nuts, an afghan crochet hook, a cute duck letter opener, a nice little home made bag as well as a great cup and saucer for me to enjoy my coffee. I love the Bamboo yarn and the pattern for a scarf and hat. I will post when I have completed one of the items, and everything arrived here on the 22nd and it truly made my day. Sorry that I missed the post for last week's topic, but... I can't remember it was over 50 years ago and I truly don't remember. I do remember taking a trip to Holland with my dad on a train to meet my grandfather and the first stop across the border had vendors coming, selling coffee with lots of cream and sugar and a cookie on the side and I do know that I had some coffee there and I think I was probably about 10+ years old or should I say young lol. As to this weeks topic , I would plant a vegetable garden, some flowers and certainly an herb garden. I love fresh herbs in the summertime and I would need the flowers to look at. I don't plant a garden anymore but we go to a you pick it farm almost every summer and that is lots of fun.

I got my swap package yesterday and what a wonderful package it is. I already took pictures and will post them tonight.

We have wonderful sunshine and temps is the low 50's, yeah its beginning to look a lot like springtime with most of the snow gone. Til next time stay happy and enjoy your coffee, I will.

Hello everyone in coffee swap land. Hope you all have a better spring than we have. Once again it is snowing hard and really and truly I can hardly stand it. As for topic no. 2. No I have not switched to lighter yarn or different projects. It will be awhile before it gets warm enough here to not want to deal with wool. I am planning on going to my knitting/crocheting class tonight (if it stops snowing) and I promise that I will post pictures tomorrow. Light, fresh roast - I'm not a fan of dark roast AT ALL. With caffeine of course!

I used to enjoy Cinnamon Hazelnut coffee, but not anymore. I'm a plain jane girl.

The first cup out of the pot with some half and half; sit down, and just drink and enjoy it - before anyone is up. I like to drink my first cup of coffee all myself.

I really like ALL colors!

I use metal hooks. I really abhor plastic ones, but I've never really tried wooden.

6. Are there any particular notions you absolute do NOT need? Some of us swap a lot - are you sure that you have enough tape measures to last your lifetime? Enough stitch markers to mark every stitch of a 10 foot wide afghan?

Tape measures! I have a ton. Stitch markers for crochet are always welcome.

You walk into the yarn shop and have exactly and only enough money to purchase 2 skeins of yarn in their 2 for 20 special they have going..The choices are a soft, thick cotton/viscose blend in your favorite colors, slightly variegated..a beautiful sock yarn that's just squishy and sproingy in your hands.. a soft, worsted weight wool like malabrigo.. and a lovely bamboo blend with colors to just die for. Which do you walk out the door with?

I would buy the bamboo because I've never tried it.

Spring

1. We're starting sign-ups on the first day of Spring - is it already truly Spring-like where you are?

Nooo... I live in Alaska, and right now it's sunny, but probably about 25 degrees or so, definitely not very spring-ish!

2. What's your favorite spring flower? Do you have one?

Yes, but I'm not sure what it is in English - in German it's called a "Schneeglockchen" which directly translates to Snow Bell. I also like crocuses and tulips.

3. What do you most look forward to about springtime?

No snow and ice! That might not happen until April for us though!

4. They've predicted a gorgeous day tomorrow - Sunny and about 65 with a nice breeze - how do you spend your day?

Gosh I don't know - maybe I'd go out for a walk with Avery, the baby I babysit.

5. The day after, it's going to be cooler and pouring down rain - does that impact your mood? How do you spend that day? what helps cheer you up?

No, rain doesn't really impact my mood. I might read a book, drink some coffee and just enjoy being inside.

Interesting handled butter spreaders. (the flat, kind of curved knife - I can't think of the name right now!)

I've been busy

Here are some pictures of the dishcloth I've been crocheting. Our weather has been almost springy here in Alaska. Just had a great lunch with Martina and Katie and I'm actually pretty full and wanting to take a nap. The dog wants to go out and play but once he is outside he runs. Well I'll go for now. See that lady? That's my momma. She had a birthday on Tuesday and spent some nice time with my niece and sister.

I sat yesterday talking to a good friend at work, and told him how there's no way I'll ever be able to pay my mom back for all the time's she's bailed me out - all the times she's been there for me when I didn't really deserve for someone to be - all the times she's been the best mom a girl could ask for.

I used to hate it when people compared me to her, or called me "Little Ingrid" - now I'm old enough to realize what a great compliment that is.

Dishcloth Swap

On question no. 4, I stay busy, watching Jake play soccer, going to the club and swim, sit around and read, drink tea and coffee, and crochet from time to time. But in general just stay as busy as I can because we have a long winter.

On question no. 5--I would sit on the beach in a very warm place read a great book or two, have a quiet, yummy lunch and just be lazy. And if money was no object, I would try and take Martina and Anne with me.

this and that and dishcloth swap

Let me start out by telling my secret pal that I received her package on Saturday and it certainly made my day brighter. Georgeanne, thank you so much for everything. The little purse is so cute and my granddaughter wanted it right away because it has a bug on it and she is "Katie Bug". The dishcloth are so pretty, almost don't want to use them and wont for a while. I love the yarn and the stitch markers (did you make them yourself?). The lotion and soap will come in handy. I thought it was pretty funny that you spoiled me and I had spoiled you in the fall. LOL.

On another matter, when I do post pictures you will see the sock I am crocheting in its glory in December and what it looks like now. I've been lazy and have not worked on it for awhile, but will start again soon. With being sick and not wanting to go out in the cold I've not been going to my weekly crocheting class.

I call them dishrag and washcloth. But when I was selling them at bazars I called them dishcloth because people would rather buy a dishcloth then a dishrag. LOL. hello everyone, Angela's package finally arrived. It was late but thru no fault of hers. She mailed the package on the 10th and it arrived in Anchorage on the 15th but was delivered to my old address (across the street from where I live now). The girls that live there just put it in a corner and forgot about it. After Christmas I finally started checking because I thought the package should be here by now and after phone calls and messages(to make sure they had the package), Martina went over there and got it. Thank you so much Angela. I loved everything you sent. The Patton yarn has wonderful colors and I trying to figure out what I want to make with it. Can't wait to try the crochet hook with th light. I am already drinking some of the coffee as in right now. All the gingerbread ornaments and the little cup are precious. Had to defend the cup because my granddaughter Katie wanted it because its sooooo cute. I'll keep the nuts an dnibble on them while watching the superbowl. Hello, everybody--my favorite winter pastime is sitting by a fire while it is snowing outside, reading a great book, drinking a cup of my favorite coffee and nibble on some cookies and listening to some Christmas songs. I love my first cup of coffee in the morning (sometimes I pour before the pot is done brewing). I love to savor it alone, lights still off and plan my day ahead, but I also love a cup of coffee with friends, some cake or cookies to nibble and rain or snow pouring down. If all my friends are busy, I have a book keep me company.

Hello everybody. So sorry for not posting in a while. I have been very busy with my Church. We collect food every Thanksgiving and in conjunction with other Churches and our local Food Bank we have a Thanksgiving Blessing. Our Church is one of the pick up points i.e. if you live at a certain zip code you come to our church with a piece of mail that shows your zip code and then you shop for your Thanksgiving dinner that feeds a family of 5. If you have a larger family then you shop for a larger family. The dinner includes everything to prepare a meal starting with turkey, vegetables, potatoes, apples, pie shells, gravy mix, dressing mix, etc.. While you wait for your turn there is coffee, tea, cake, and pie. We have a children room for coloring, drawing, books to read or be read to and face painting. If a person wishes to pray, there is a prayer room and people to pray with you.

This year we passed out 600 meals to feed 3,000 + people and city wide various churches to cover all zip codes in Anchorage served a total of 4,180 meals to feed 20,900+ people. I feel very fortunate to work with our Church and it makes my Thanksgiving so much better.

As for my family we are fine. We've had snow and will have a white Thanksgiving. Today my daughter Anne arrived in Virginia to spend Thanksgiving with her friend Chan and family. Thank you guys for giving her a family to celebrate the holiday with.

I will go to my crocheting class tonight. We will have a little party and I will post pictures in the next 2 days.

Here is my answer to the weekly topic.

I haven't crochet a whole lot since my girls grew up but am doing a lot now that I am involved in all these wonderful swaps. This year I will be crocheting a pair of socks for myself and some small items to give away as presents and I will try to maybe crochet something for Katie's American doll and a coat for her new (stuffed) dog Shimmer. We'll see. I will post pictures as I get along but not until after Thanksgiving, since I'm helping our church with an event to help those in need.

It's been awhile since I've posted on my blog, but I do have an excuse, I have been sick. I know, it was "just" a cold but since I am a kidney transplant patient and have just about no immune system to speak of, even a cold turns into a major event. Enough said, I'm back.

KT, will post a picture of your package, and everybody, the gum is missing since my granddaughter took care of that. It was there, really.

As to the topic of the week on the coffee swap, here goes my answer: I do not remember when I had my "first" taste of coffee, but I do remember being about 10 and being on a train from Germany to the Netherlands to visit my grandparents, when the train stopped in the first Dutch station and vendors came to the windows selling coffee. This was coffee with lots of milk (for runner of a latte?) with lots of sugar and a small cookie. I tried it and loved it and for a long time I drank my coffee just like that. Once I met my husband I started drinking my coffee black because that was the way he liked it. Now I drink my coffee with creamer and I love a light roast. Here is a little sidebar. My Dad was dutch and he drank his coffee with cream and sugar all his life and all 3 of my daughters were given a cookie dunked in coffee by the time they were 4-5 months old. So they probably got their first taste of of coffee while pretty young .

I loved everything. The Lion brand cotton ease (now I get to try it) The dishcloth are beautiful and I will try a dishcloth out of the pattern book you sent. Had to defend the little box with the scissors, thread cutter and tape measure. My granddaughter Katie loved it as she did the gum (her very favorite). I look forward to trying the soaps and the stitch markers will come in handy. Thank you so much for being such a thoughtful swap partner. Here are my answers to the questions for the coffee swap:

What is your favorite kind of coffee? Any light roast. But i like Kona coffee and recently tried Folgers Gourmet coffee Light roast and it was pretty good. I also love German Tschibo coffee.

Do you prefer whole been or ground coffee? I prefer ground because I am lazy and don't want to fool around with grinding the beans.

This time of year, there are often Holiday Blends available , and many flavored coffee.Do you enjoy special blends? I love Kona Cookies/Cinnamon and Millbrooks Hazelnut/Cinnamon. I don't go to much for the holiday blends per se.

How do you take your coffee? I use only creamer (the liquid not powdered). And I like regular coffee but will drink decaf if that's all that is available.

Do you prefer to drink from a nice thick mug, or a matched cup and saucer? I love a thin cup which doesn't have to have a matching saucer. I'll use a mug if I have to but the thinner the better.

What is your favorite kind of winter? The end of it, lol, no, I love Christmas and get togethers with friends and family. Cookie exchanges and just about everything connected with the holidays.

Do you celebrate in December, and if yes, which holiday. We celebrate Christmas and New Year and have lots of fun doing both.

If you celebrate Christmas, do you put up a tree. Yes, indeed we do and having lots of fun trimming it. We also bake a birthday cake for Christmas to celebrate the borthday of Jesus.

Would you prefer items related to the holiday or winter-themed items that you collect. Either would be great. I used to collect santas but am trying to start a collection of ginger bread men.

Do you ever wear scarves, mittens or hats? I wear mittens and scarves sometime but no hats, they itch my head.

What is your favorite winter or holiday memory. I don't have one favorite. There are so many of them and I could never name them all. Actually they are all wonderful.

Do you knit or crochet? And how long? I crochet, and have done so for 55+ years.

Do you like, wood, metal or plastic needles/hooks. I love metal, don't like plastic to much and have never tried wood.

What sort of project do you enjoy making? Dishcloth, handbags (just finished a felted one and next week will try to start to crochet a pair of socks.

What is your favorite type of yarn you like to work with. I really don't have a favorite, just don't like to use scratchy wool.

Do you spin or dye? No, I do not do either.

I love fall, the falling leaves, the crisp weather which is sometimes mixed with snow. So far we've not had any. It's probably waiting til the kids go out trick or treating, ha ha. I love to bake different fall goodies but don't do it so much anymore. Everyone is watching their weight, lol. There is not much apple picking going on around here.

When I lived in Colorado we would buy apples by the bushel and freshly made apple juice and apple cider (one of my favorites).

I am counting days until Christmas because Anne will visit us to have a nice white Christmas, we hope.

Hello everybody. Hope things are going well for all of you. I am doing great. First of all, thanks everybody for visiting my blog. I really appreciate it. Our fall here is still very nice even though it is getting colder. There certainly is "frost out on the pumpkin", the top of the mountains is solid white. Katie's debut as a singer (ha ha) went very well. She and her classmates did a great job of singing their songs at the October Fest. Avrey turned 4 mos old and Clara is now 2 years old and my very own "Baby" will have a birthday this month but I wont tell you how young she is turning.

Went to my crocheting class yesterday and just about finished up a non felted bag from the cotton Jessi sent me in my vacation package.

As to the weekly challenge I am going to describe what I carry in my little bag, which Anne made for me, crochet hooks from very small to quite large, tapestry and darning needles, my wonderful stitch markers from Jessi, a tape measure, some elastic and dental floss (from my Lily Chin class), buttons. My little bag is various shades of blue and my crochet hooks are all Boye. I will try to post some pictures this weekend.

Now I will go, have to send some e-mails and wish all of you a wonderful rest of the week and a great weekend.

Hello all, I have had a busy week and there is more to follow. Took a class with Lily Chin last weekend. Tips and tricks for crocheters, if you have a chance take it or the one for knitters, it is great and she is great. I did learn quite a few tricks and tips. Here's a picture of my daughter (on the right) and me with Lily Chin!

As you all know by now, I've tried my first felted bag, and if do say so myself, it turned out great!!

My family is doing great. Clara my little 2 year old is on vacation with her parents, Avrey, my little one is turning 4 month this week and is growing like a weed. Katie, my granddaughter is loving school and they will be singing German songs at the October Fest this weekend. Tomorrow is last practice and the family is looking forward to going and enjoy them singing and the October Fest.

Tomorrow night we are all going out to dinner to celebrate my son-in-law's birthday. This is an annual happening,lol, and we are all looking forward to it.

I've been on vacation!

I received a great package from Jessi, my VVS angel.

Jessi, thank you so very much for the package. I loved everything in it. I am already using the great mouse pad and I can certainly use the planner. The pouch you sent for my crochet hook is great. You wont believe it but I have a purse with the same pattern.

The pattern book is wonderful. I love the purses in there and will try to make one soon.

The little carrier bag with yarn is great. I'll love carrying my crocheting around in it. The pad, cards and sticky notes are great also and I will enjoy nibbling on my treat which is just up my alley. The stationary and your letter are wonderful. Everyone who has seen the stitch markers oohing and aahing over them as I am.

And last but certainly not least, I love the yarn. I am taking it to my class on Wednesday to ask my teacher to recommend something special I can make with it.

Thank you so much again. You were truly an angel for me!

I love to cook, pea and lentil soup, beef stew, chili and taco soup.

Taco soup:

1# hamburger meat
1 medium onion, chopped finely
1 16 oz can each navy, kidney and pinto beans (or beans of your choice)
1 can of Rotel tomatoes
Taco seasoning

Brown hamburger meat and onions.
Add beans undrained with rotel tomatoes. Stir. Add taco seasoning to your taste.
Serve with sour cream, shredded cheese or chopped onions and Tostido chips.

Hope everyone is doing as well as I am doing. It is raining hard outside and I just had to clean up my blog. Thank you Tina for your help.

I am crocheting on my bag for tomorrow's class and I am preparing and doing my homework for a class I am attending this weekend.

Yarn Expo is in Anchorage this weekend and will attend a class taught by Lily Chin "shortcuts and tricks for crocheters". I will let everyone how it went next week. I am real exited about going.

Hello, here are a few of the many reasons why I like fall. I love fall colors, I love that we are getting closer to Halloween and Thanksgiving and most of all we are getting closer to Christmas and my daughter will come and visit so she can have a white Christmas which we usually have and she certainly does not. This coming weekend I will get my few Halloween decorations out of storage and put up my summer clothes and get my fall and winter clothes in order and wearable condition. I love it when seasons change because it seems like I have a brand new wardrobe.

I'm late with my blog this week. Had a sick granddaughter who for the first time is fever free today. She was sent home from school last Monday and has been sick ever since and as I said today is the first fever free day.

Didn't go to crocheting class on Wednesday. I had car trouble and a man from church came by to check it out--result I'll need a new radiator.

Our fall has been wonderful. Lots of rain but also some sunshine. And turning of the leaves is great. No snow yet and temps are not too bad.

I prefer to use metal crocheting hooks. They feel better than plastic (never tried wood). Plastic hooks feel unsubstantial to me whereas the metal ones feel like I have something in my hand.. I will use them (plastic hooks) when I have no choice. The brand I usually use is Boye. I checked all my hooks and they are all Boye. No other brand; now I have to go its lunchtime for my little munchkins.

dishcloth exchange and odds and ends

Hello, just my very short answer to the topic of the week. No, I don't change yarns when the cooler season comes. I mostly crochet and use cotton. I do try to change colors. Kinda stay away from the very pastels.

Now to the odds and ends. I've been crocheting dishcloth and today a small blanket for my granddaughter's small, plush puppy. Dishcloth are easy to do for me while I'm babysitting. My little charges are Avrey who is 3 months old and Clara who will be 2 years on the 1st of October.

All of us, baby, toddler and I have been having a cold. But thank goodness , we're at the tail end. In the afternoon I pick up my sweet granddaughter Katie from school. This is her first year and I miss her a lot being gone during the day.

Tomorrow night I am going to a crocheting class to learn how to crochet a felted bag. It might take me awhile.

I will go for tonight and make myself a cup of hot lemonade and then go to bed with a good book. Pictures might be posted later. Ingrid

I crochet and have been crocheting for over 50 years.

2. Have you made dischloths before? Do you use them yourself, give them as gifts, or both?

Yes, I have made them before, and I use them and give them as gifts.

3. What's your favorite cotton to make cloths from? What cotton would you like to try that you haven't before ?

I like Sugar N Creme yarn - I don't really know a lot of other ones much. I've crochet with some before, but don't know their names. I'm not really sure of others, I have heard a lot about Cotton Ease, it might be neat to try that.

4. If you knit, do you prefer circular or straight needles? For all, do you prefer wooden, metal, or plastic needles?

I always use plastic and metal needles. I've never tried wooden before.

5. What are your favorite colors? Any colors you don't like much?

I like all colors; there aren't really any that I don't like. Gray, I like it mostly with other colors rather than alone, and purple and lavender are my favorite colors.

6. What do you like best about Autumn?

I like the change of colors in the trees and looking forward to Thanksgiving.

7. Pies: Pumpkin? Apple? Pecan? All of em? or No Thanks!

I like Apple and Pecan, but my very favorite is Mincemeat pie!

8. When you were a kid, were you the one who couldn't wait to get started with school , or the one who overslept on the 1st day?

I couldn't wait for school to get started, usually.

I don't celebrate it, per se, but I do decorate for it and hand out candy to the kids.

Macadamia nuts, cashews and bread n butter pickles LOL. Hey, it counts as a goodie! I love em!

I have grandkids and kids - my kids are grown, but I live with 3 of my grandkids and my daughter and her husband.

I don't think there is a yarn that describes my personality unless there's something scratchy ;)

I've used them for both, but mostly for dishcloths.

The end nears--my vacation

Hello everybody, this will probably be the last time you will hear about my vacation. I have spent the last week here at Annie's, going swimming and just hanging out. On Friday (the 29th) was one of the highlights of my trip. A coworker (Mike) gave Annie tickets to attend the RUMC (Roswell United Methodist Church) 26th Annual Patriotic Celebration. What a treat. The Atlanta Wind Symphony (Mike's Band) was playing and the RUMC Sanctuary Choir was singing. The playing and singing of Patriotic songs was heartwarming. The Twentiana Dancers entertained us with a dance. All services were recognized and veterans were asked to stand when their anthem was played. Various little films were shown to let us know how far our country has come over the years. All I can say, what a truly inspiring evening. Thank you Mike for the tickets.

On Saturday we drove to Helen, which a friend, Alisa, had recommended I see. A small Bavarian town in the middle of Georgia. Very nice but oh so hot. This was the first time felt hot since coming to Georgia and during all my travels. We bought an ice cream cone and it melted faster than I could lick it.

On our way to Helen we found a couple of treasures, One, an outlet mall with a Coldwater Creek, Big Dog, Dressbarn and many more stores to browse thru. Oh, what fun. Annie bought me two very pretty and a black cardigan like sweater. Thank you Annie.

A bit farther down the road we came upon a roadside stand "The Tomato House". We bought fresh Georgia peaches, huge, delicious tomatoes (I'm still eating them), fresh white corn and okra. peaches, corn and okra are gone. We ate them ALL up!!

On Sunday we went downtown Atlanta to Annie's favorite yarnshop. She had fun browsing and I had fun watching her.

For the 4th of July we have planned a quite day st home. We'll eat some BBQ'd ribs, deviled eggs and potato salad together with a glass of wine to salute our country.

Dishcloth Swap Received! And more of my vacation

Hello everybody. I'm doing great and my visit to Dallas, Texas was great, just a little short. My sister-in-law and brother-in-law came to the airport to pick me up. They had my nieces two daughters, Celeste and Caroline, with them. I had never met either of them. They are two beautiful young ladies.

From the airport we went to Fuddruckers (a first for me) to eat lunch. Then we went on home and talked trying to catch up with 13 years of not seeing each other. That afternoon my niece Maria came by and I had not seen her in 13 years either. My, my where did the time go. After talking awhile we realized that she deals a lot with my daughter Annemarie without knowing about each other. Dinner was a delicious baked ham, green beans, corn, deviled eggs, and my favorite green jello mold. I felt like a stuffed turkey when I was done. Thanks again Maxine.

The next day we drove to Oklahoma and did some gambling in a casino there. Driving there, gambling, and driving home took pretty much care of Thursday. Again we spent the rest of the evening watching a movie and talking, trying to catch up. Also, not to forget, my nephew Marty came over to say hello. It was wonderful to see him. He and his wife were getting ready to go to an archery competition. I believe they both took 3rd place. Way to go guys.

On Friday we went down town Dallas, Went to the J.F.Kennedy memorial, visited the old court house and just looked around down town. Then we had a yummy lunch and went on home. In the afternoon Mitch and Darren (Marty's boys) came over to visit. Mitch is an accomplished Saxophone player and he is going to college to get hist masters so he can teach music in college.
Darren is in the Army National Guard. He served in Afghanistan and various other places. Presently he is going to Paramedic school. Both are fine young man.

In the evening Maxine and I went to have some great Texas BBQ and then went to a Dollar Tree store. We don't have those in Alaska.

The next day it was time for me to leave. On the way to the airport Maxine called her brother J.L. and we sang happy birthday to him over the phone. In the Dallas airport I had to throw my water and my toothpaste away.

Maxine, Morris and extended family, thank you so much for making my trip a memorable and fun one. I will post pictures as soon as I can.

Now I need to thank Stephanie for my dishcloth package. Thank you so very much. All kinds of Milka chocolate (my favorite), various soaps, cremes. candles (tea lights) and two holders for same. Great dishcloth patterns and a beautiful dishcloth and some of the softest cotton ever. You truly spoiled me a lot. Thanks again for your thoughtfulness.

Do you knit, or crochet, or do both? How long have you been knitting\crocheting? I have been crocheting since I was in first grade - since 1949. I know how to knit, but I don't like it, so I never really knit.
Have you knit dishcloths or dishtowels before? I have crocheted dishcloths before. I haven't crocheted a full dishtowel, but I have made and sold towels where I add a bib up top to hang it on the fridge.
What are your favorite cotton yarns? Is there a cotton or linen you’ve been dying to try but have not? I've only really used Peaches N Creme and Sugar N Cream, along with a nice cotton my daughter Martina picked up that I used to crochet for my pal in the last swap.
Are there any cotton yarns you don’t enjoy knitting with? Not that I've found yet!
What type of needle do you prefer using? (Metal/Wood/Plastic) I prefer metal needles. I've never tried bamboo.
What other projects do you enjoy knitting or crocheting? I like to make baby blankets - I also crochet squares for Warm Up America.

What colors are your kitchen and bath decorated in, if any? The kitchen has black appliances, and the bathroom I use is decorated in Sage and Beige.
What are your favorite colors and what colors do you dislike? I like all colors, but my favorite is lavender\purple. I even like yellow.

Hello everybody. I am back in Georgia. We came in last night and slept late this morning. I am doing great and we had a wonderful time in Virginia. Thank you so much again Channon and Mark. You were great hosts and taught me a lot about Virginia during my visit. Thank you again.

We left on Tuesday and went to Alexandria to visit various yarn shops including one in D.C.. It was fun for me even though I'm not a knitter. I "just" crochet. Here are some photos from the yarn shops - of me, and Annie, as well as Chan and Amy, who was Annie's spoiler in an exchange. They were all really great, and it was fun meeting them.

On Wednesday Annemarie and I went to Washington D.C.. We parked the car across from the Old Post Office, which is a beautiful building:

From there we went on a tour bus down Constitution Avenue to the Capitol Building.

We continued to all major buildings all over town, as well as the various memorials from the World War 2 to the Vietnam memorial. We also went to the Thomas Jefferson. Lincoln and FDR memorials.

We drove by the "Watergate" hotel, embassy row, the IRS building, the Supreme court, the National Archives (this is a place I'd like to go in sometime), the various Smithsonian museums, the Pentagon and we ate at the Pentagon mall. The last stop was on Pennsylvania Avenue at the White House. President Bush did not come out to invite me in for a cup of coffee.

What I saw of Washington D.C. is one of the most beautiful cities I have ever seen. After the tour we drove back to Charlottesville, to Channon and Mark's house. Here's the view from their back porch:

Thursday was a trip to Richmond for a leisurely lunch and more yarn shop visits and on Friday we went to various stores (surprise, surprise - you can see all the shops and yarn on Annie's blog) and visited Monticello. Wonderful gardens, great park and a great hose. Did not go inside because we would have had to wait for almost an hour before our tour would begin, it was raining and I was sleeveless and in shorts. I did buy a book and hope this will suffice.

Hello family and friends. Hope this finds you all well. I am doing great. Am in Virginia near Charlottsville and what a beautiful countryside. Channon and Mark are great hosts and I feel truly pampered. The weather is great sunny and warm, but not hot.

The trip up here was great for me. I think Anne got kind a tired as it was a long drive and I am no help driving. South Carolina as well as North Carolina are wonderful looking States. I had not been to either. As you can see on some of the pictures North Carolina has fields and fields of yellow lilies and even though we traveled on the interstate it still looked so pretty.

Martina, guess what, yesterday on our way to shopping , we drove through Abermarle county and passed the city of Cozet. Yes, Rita Mae Brown and Sneaky Pie Brown live right here, a country side we are quite familiar with from the books.

We went shopping in Waynesboro and there are quite a few historic sides all around. Tomorrow it goes on to Alexandria and Washington D.C.. I am so exited to to go there and see sights that I know from history books. We have booked a sight seeing tour and will meet our bus at the old post office and go from there to see a lot of the various monuments and catch a glimpse of the White House.

Jacob and Martin, I hope the Ina K soccer tournament went good for you, and Katie how do you like soccer and your dance classes? Martina, congratulation again on your new job and Kirk, I hope all is well for you . I love and miss you all, mom.

Hello, I'm back. This is Sunday and we went downtown Atalanta to Annie's favorite yarn shop. It was nice and we were even able to find close parking.I bought some cotton yarn for my secret pal in the dishcloth exchange.

On the way home I visited with a turtle as you can see. They are on different street corners like the salmon in Anchorage. Dinner was at KFC as neither one of us felt like cooking. We also took pictures of Magnolia trees because neither one of us knew what they were.

The next day was work for Annie and I stayed at home, did some laundry, cooked Fajitas for dinner, crochet, read and played computer games.

Tuesday we went allover the place buying stuff so I could bake some goodies for Annie's office. I went to a Super Target which did not impress me very much. In the evening I baked cookies, strawberry shortcakes and an apple cake. Oh, and we went to a German bakery where I got me a bread and a slice of plum cake, yummie.
Annie took it to work Wednesday and there was nothing left over, so I guess it was OK.

For dinner we had Sauerbraten and potato balls. Turned out pretty goood

Tonight is whatever night . We went to buy a cooler (styrofoam) at Big Lots for $5. We're trying to get packed and sandwiches made for the trip. Annie has to work 1/2 a day and then it is off to Virginia. I will post more after we get back and before I go to Dallas .

I miss you all, hope the boys will do great at the Ina K. Tell Katie I can't wait to see her dancing and playing soccer. Tina, Kirk, Martin, Jake and Katie I love you and see you soon, grandma.

1. If you could visit any state in the US, which would it be and why?

Florida, because I've never been there and it sounds like a wonderful state where I could eat oranges off trees, be in the water, watch alligators, and have a great time! And visit Disneyworld! (or is it Land in Florida?)

2. If you could visit any country in the world, other than your own, which would it be and why?

Germany because it's my home and I have a lot of family living there.

3. Have you ever driven across several states/providence/countries?

Yes! I've traveled from Colorado we visited states all around, including at four corners. I've driven from Colorado to Alabama, and to Texas, and back again, through many states including Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri, Mississippi, Oklahoma, and Louisiana

4. Have you ever visited someplace you consider exotic? Where was it?

I think Spain is the most exotic place I've been to.

5. What was your favorite "travel" vacation? Why?

We used to take travel vacations at least once a month when I lived in Germany while my husband was stationed there. We'd go to places like Switzerland, Austria, Holland, Belgium, Luxumberg, France, England - I've also been to Denmark, Sweden and Norway. I enjoyed these trips because most of them were done as a family.

6. Have you ever played tourist in your own home city/state (if international, country)? Explain.

Yes, I've played tourist in Alaska and Colorado when I still lived there.

7. Are you a museum visitor, beach comber or an amusement seeker?

Beach Comber. I love the heat.

8. What's your favorite type of yarn?

Actually, my favorite kinds of yarn are usually the acrylics like Red Heart and Lion's Brand you can get at Wal-Mart or Michaels. For most things I like making, they're functional and work up just fine - not to mention, I can afford to buy them.

9. What's your least favorite type of yarn?

Wool. It seems to make me itchy to even work with it now, and I used to have to wear it as a child, because my mother would knit us stockings from wool, and man did they itch! It wasn't even nice wools like you can find today - mostly it was old sweaters that had pulled out to make stockings, because this was after the war.

10. What items do you like to knit/crochet?

I am a crocheter, and I enjoy making lots of baby blankets I sell in bazaars, dishrags, and hats and scarves - usually for things like my Girl Scout Troop.

11. What do you pack, knit/crochet wise when you go on vacation?

Some yarn, and a few hooks for whatever I'm working on.

12. What other crafts do you do/would like to do other than Knit/Crochet?

All kinds of things. I enjoyed making small projects with my girl scout troop (that I've given up after this year ended) or with my granddaughter. We've made bunnies from washcloths, potpourri filled jars and things like that.

I thinks sometimes I'd like learning how to make stained glass; I think it's beautiful, but I don't think I'd have the patience for it.

13. Are you allergic to anything? (Yarn wise or treat wise)

I'm not allergic to wool but have discovered recently that even crocheting with it tickles my nose.

14. What is your favorite color? Least Favorite?

Purple. I LOVE purple in all shades. I don't have a least favorite color.

15. Sweet or Savory (Treat not personality)?

Savory - I enjoy things like pretzels and nuts and chips, or slim jims - stuff like that far moreso than sweets. Especially since I really shouldn't eat sweets since I'm diabetic.

The beginning of vacation

Hello all, hope this finds you well. Arrived in Atlanta on Wednesday and you'll be glad to know that the airport is still under construction. Annie was at the baggage claim to welcome me. My flight was uneventful and I wish I had the same flight back instead of having to change planes in LA.

We went to Ft McPherson from the airport and got groceries at the commissary (very small). Went home, unpacked and went to Annie's work to get introduced to her team. From there we went to Coldwater Creek and the store is simply fantastic.

The next day I just took it kinda easy because I was very tired.

Friday Annie only worked 1/2 day and we went to get our nails done (best fill I ever had), also had my feet massaged and nails cut, no pedicure.

From there we went to a BBQ place to eat so we would be fortified for shopping at Big Lots, Publix grocery, and Payless at which time my credit card didn't work. Pretty embarrassing. Thank goodness only the bank's server was down and I'm not out of money yet. Katie don't worry. I will buy your chocolate. I'm sure to save money for that.

On Saturday morning we left for Anniston and arrived an hour early because we forgot the time change. I 20 is the same as I remember it from about 40 years ago. Same fireworks stand were your dad used to buy cherry bombs and set them off under Mawma and Pawpa house. The town of Aniston is a sad sight to see. Almost every other store is closed. Ft McClallan has only some reserve units. So the town is dying a slow death. The median on the road had large trees and I remembered going on the median once when I took you to the Dr. on the base and run over several of newly planted saplings before making it back to the road (one day after I got my drivers license in B'ham).

We then drove around awhile and went to Starbucks and waited for JL and Betty. Had a reunion and went on to eat. I had a pork bbq plate with pulled pork, a slab of cornbread, a huge slice of tomatoe and southern green beans, and all for $6.50. From there JL and Bety wanted to go to Walmart (they don't have one in Double Spring, even though they now have 2 traffic lights). From there Betty went and rented a room at the Travelers Inn ($45.00) and just talked for a few hours.

On our drive home we got a pretty bad scare, a car next to us was going 70 mph (speed limit) as we did. He hit his breaks and came to a complete stop which kinda scared us. His reason? A state trooper was sitting on the side of the highway. We all went on and the the officer passed us and pulled the guy over, yeah.

As you will see, everyone has aged quite a bit and I am very glad that I went. This all for today, more in a couple of days. Boys, I love and miss you. Is there something yo would like me to bring you? Let me know. I love and miss you all but having a great time. Mom, Oma, grandma

When did you learn to knit? Who taught you?

I crochet, because I prefer it - I know how to knit, but never do. I learned to crochet in first grade in school in Germany.

What was your very first completed object? Your most recent?
First was a potholder I made when I was 6 - it was a school project. That was the first thing we learned to crochet. Most recently, I crocheted a scarf and hat for my daughter when she visited, and also 8 little hats for my girls in my girl scout troop.

What was the very first thing you sent to the frog pond? (pulled out and started over) Your most recent?

I can't remember back that far for the first thing - it was 54 years ago! :) Most recently, I had to start again on one of the many hats I made my girls.

What is currently on the needles for you?

Nothing right now, but I'm looking forward to making my dishcloth for this swap!

What types of needles do you enjoy working with? What have you tried and hated?

I don't really have a preference - I can crochet as well with metal as with plastic, and don't really prefer one to the other

They were all the same - I crocheted them to sell at bazaars. They were just simple squares without any lace or other pattern, but they sure sold like hot cakes.

I really love lavender. I hate peach and lilac. Other than that, I don't have a big preference; I like a lot of different things.

What colors (if any) are your bathroom and kitchen decorated in? The bathroom is olive and beige, and the kitchen isn't really themed, but appliances are black and we get a lot of things in blue.

All kinds - just about anything. I enjoy thinking of projects for my girl scout troop and kids I babysit.

Chocolate: Dark? White? Milk? Ew? Ew, most of the time. I can enjoy a good piece now and then, but really can't get the kinds I love in the US easily. I like Milka from Germany, and it's not always to easy to find.

Do you like salty treats? What kinds? I like cashews and macadamia nuts, and Hawaiian chips that come in a purple bag - I think they're from Tim's.

If you could go anywhere in the world for one day and spend the day any way you wanted, where would you go and what would you do?

I would go somewhere warm and bask in the sun and enjoy a book.
